The Oklahoma State University Department of Animal and Food Sciences has distinguished programs in teaching, research, and extension. Building upon its tradition of excellence, our department discovers, develops and distributes scientific knowledge to advance the animal and food industries.

We are the fifth largest animal science department in the country and one of the largest departments on campus with over 1,000 undergraduate students, but with a small town feel, a caring attitude and a commitment to every student. We are one of the few land-grant institutions who still maintain livestock and wheat facilities for teaching, research and extension.

The OSU Department of Animal and Food Sciences offers two majors (animal science and food science) and 12 study options. We have an excellent reputation for advisement and mentoring by faculty. We also have the largest departmental scholarship offering at OSU (with more than $400,000 awarded each year) and more national judging championships than any other university.

Our department is committed to the advancement of biosciences through both basic and applied research. Our faculty and students conduct cutting-edge research projects in ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition, meat and food science, genetics, physiology, animal health, and sustainability. Our researchers publish their work in high-impact, scientific journals and they have been recognized for their outstanding achievements. We also encourage undergraduate students to gain research experience and knowledge through our Undergraduate Research Scholar Program.

Through the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, our county educators and area, district and state specialists develop science-based educational programs to help Oklahomans solve local issues and concerns, promote leadership and manage resources wisely. Our extension programs focus on:

  • Connecting current research on animal health and production to livestock producers and consumers
  • Providing learning opportunities for animal husbandry
  • Food, nutrition, health and safety education
  • Youth, family, community and business development
