A lifelong cattlemen, he has considerable experience in beef production, extension programming and live animal evaluation, including serving as a show judge at a multitude of national events.  Mark, his wife Brenda and two daughters Sydney and Charley, live on a ranch near Orlando, Oklahoma where they operate J&J Cattle Company.

Since 1992, Dr. Johnson has been the faculty supervisor of the OSU Purebred Beef Cattle Center. During his time as supervisor, the OSU purebred herd has bred and shown many champions, highlighted by exhibiting the Champion “Pen of Three” Angus bulls at the National Western in Denver in 1994, 1997 and 2006, and the Reserve Champion Pen in 2009 and 2011. Dr. Johnson moved into a joint Extension and Teaching appointment in 2014.


About Dr. Johnson

Mark Johnson is an Associate Professor of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University where he held the Totusek Endowed Chair of Animal Science from 2009 to 2014.  He has served as the Supervisor of the OSU Purebred Beef Cattle Center since 1992.

Mark also coached the OSU Livestock Judging Team from 1992 to 2013, during which time, the team finished either Champion or Reserve Champion team in 70% of their contests.  He earned the “National Coach of the Year” award seven times, coached six teams that won the American Royal and four National Champion teams.

The 2007 OSU team holds the all-time record for high team score at the American Royal.  The 2005 OSU team set the record for the all-time high score in the National Championship contest.  The 2012 OSU team holds the all-time record for high team score in the Carload contest at the National Western.  The 2001, 2010 and 2012 OSU National Champion teams are three of the only 12 teams in history to win the American Royal and Louisville contests back to back.

A lifelong cattlemen, Mark has much experience in beef production and cattle evaluation including judging national events, jackpots and state fairs.  Mark, his wife Brenda and two daughters Sydney and Charley, live on a ranch near Orlando, Oklahoma where they operate J&J Cattle Company.  J&J is a multi-breed purebred seedstock operation including Angus, Charolais and Hereford.
