Dr. DeSilva is an associate professor in our department with a focus in animal molecular genetics. He teaches several animal genetics and biotechnology classes.

Dr. DeSilva also maintains the popular Breeds of Livestock website.


Dr. DeSilva's research focuses on animal health and genetics. His projects involve functional genomics of adipogenesis in cattle and metagenomics of rumen and other intestinal microflora. He has been a prolific researcher, publishing many articles during his time at OSU.

Dr. DeSilva serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology.

About Dr. DeSilva

Dr. Udaya DeSilva received his B.V.Sc. degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka and was a practicing large-animal veterinarian for four years. He received his M.S. degree in animal genetics from the Kansas State University and his Ph.D. in human molecular genetics from the Washington University School of Medicine. After graduation, he worked for Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Sydney, Australia, studying functional genomics of wool production before joining the Department of Animal and Food Sciences at Oklahoma State University in 2001. His research interests are in adipogenesis in cattle and metagenomics of gastrointestinal and reproductive tracts of domestic animals. He teaches animal genetics and biotechnology.
