OSU Yorkshire gilt named champion at 2018 World Pork Expo

STILLWATER, Okla. (June 19, 2018) - The OSU Swine Research and Teaching Center exhibited the Champion Yorkshire gilt at the World Pork Expo in Des Moines, IA, on June 8th, 2018. The champion gilt sold the next day at the Pork Expo Yorkshire sale. The team consisted of associate professor Scott Carter, herd manager Jim Coakley, and student workers Jared Harshman, Justin Leonard, Cooper Wood, Andrew Coakley, Georgena Ratliff, and Alex Adams.

OSU’s Department of Animal Science shows progression with new name

STILLWATER, OK (June 1, 2018) - The Department of Animal Science within Oklahoma State University’s Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will change its name to the Department of Animal and Food Sciences. The change, effective July 1, was made after input from departmental faculty, staff, current students and alumni.

STILLWATER, OK (May 14, 2018) - Clint Rusk, animal science department head, and Adele Tongco, former director of the CASNR Study Abroad Program, are taking 32 OSU students on a study abroad trip to New Zealand on May 13th – May 26th, 2018. The students will be studying New Zealand agriculture. They will visit beef cattle operations, dairy cattle farms, honey farms, Orchards, red deer farms, sheep farms, and vegetable farms.

Nutrition a key component to managing growing horses

STILLWATER, Oklahoma (May 8, 2018) Horse managers can learn a lot from mothers who tell kids to eat what is on their plates so they will grow up big and strong. Generally, 50 percent to 60 percent of a horse’s mature weight is reached by 12 months of age, and 80 percent to 90 percent is reached by 24 months of age. These are the growing years, and a bit of applied “motherly concern” can last a horse’s lifetime.

OSU’s top three-minute presenters awarded

Sabra Billups, a food science graduate student, has won the $2,000 grand prize in the third annual Oklahoma State University President’s Fellows Grand Three Minute Challenge (3MC). The grand challenge pits the top student competitors from earlier contests on campus against each other to present their thesis (Three Minute Thesis®) or presentation (Three Minute Presentation) quickly and clearly, while keeping the audience’s attention. Billups won with her presentation “Antimicrobial Ice Sanitation.” In the process of competing, she also refined valuable skills that will help further her career.

OSU Ferguson Family Dairy Center upgrades a labor of love

STILLWATER, Oklahoma (April 5, 2018) – What started as a love story at Oklahoma State University now stands to be a match made in heaven for the dairy industry throughout Oklahoma and the region. OSU alumnus Larry Ferguson discovered the loves of his life when he was working at the OSU Dairy Center in 1975, both in terms of his career and in the former Kayleen Helms. Forty three years later, the former president and CEO of Schreiber Foods and his wife Kayleen were in Stillwater April 5 to witness dedication ceremonies for new facilities at the OSU Ferguson Family Dairy Center.

OSU student awarded Goldwater Scholarship

Oklahoma State University student Sage Becker has been awarded a 2018 Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious national honors recognizing high achievers who seek research careers in the natural sciences, mathematics, and engineering. Becker, who’s been extremely active in research since she started at OSU, is a junior from Keota, Iowa, majoring in animal science with a concentration in animal biotechnology and a minor in biochemistry. She was a member of the Animal Science Freshman Research Scholars program, the Wentz Research Scholars program and is currently a Niblack Research Scholar. Her latest research focuses on the development of immune-boosting alternatives to antibiotics.

The Oklahoma State University Swine Research and Education Center team won Grand Champion Truckload at the 2017 National Swine Registry’s National Barrow Show on September 11, 2017. The team entered the truckload contest with a set of six purebred Yorkshire barrows. The OSU Swine Center has exhibited breeding stock at the show in previous years, however, this is the first time OSU has been represented in the truckload competition.

Dr. Leon Spicer, professor of reproductive physiology in the Department of Animal Science at Oklahoma State University (OSU), has been collaborating with Dr. Francesca Caloni, an expert in veterinary toxicology from the Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Milan since 2004. This collaboration has led to six Italian visiting scholars coming to OSU to train in Dr. Spicer’s research laboratory over the past 13 years.

The OSU equine program has grown significantly over the past year. With a new building, new manager and three new courses, students have more opportunities than ever for hands-on learning with horses. This spring, five students began the breaking and training process with two and three-year-old geldings. Under the guidance of Natalie Baker and Dr. Steven Cooper, these students learned how to start colts under saddle and lay a solid foundation for future owners to build upon.
