Distinguished Service Award Recipients 2018

This award was established in 1978 to recognize those individuals who have achieved excellence in terms of accomplishment and service in some field of animal agriculture, but who are not graduates of the OSU Animal Science Department. Doug Hufstedler received this award in 2018.

Doug Hufstedler, Ph.D.

Doug Hufstedler grew up on his family’s farm and stocker operation near Amherst, TX (between Lubbock and Amarillo). To earn extra spending money when their work on the farm was done, Doug and his brother would also work at nearby Littlefi eld Feedyard (now part of Friona Industries) cleaning out feed bunks, scrubbing water tanks and helping the processing crews when they were shorthanded. This was where Doug fi rst met Dr. Wally Koers, Littlefi eld Feedyard’s nutritional consultant at that time, who fi rst introduced Doug to opportunities in beef cattle nutritional consulting as a potential career to consider pursuing. After graduating from high school, Doug enrolled in the Department of Animal Science at Abilene Christian University. During the summer of his junior year, Doug renewed his acquaintance with the Koers Nutrition group and travelled with their consulting associate collecting and summarizing feedlot performance data. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1988. Doug went on to Texas A&M where he received his M.S. degree in Animal Science in 1991 and his Ph.D. degree in Nutrition in 2001.

After completing his M.S. degree and starting a family, Doug put his graduate education on hold to provide for his family by serving as the multi-species nutritionist for Producers Cooperative Association in Bryan, TX. In 1996, he was promoted to Feed Division Manager, a role which he held until 2000.

Upon completion of his Ph.D. in 2001, Dr. Hufstedler became a founding partner with Livestock Management Consultants, LLC, where he served until 2005 after which he went to work for Elanco Animal Health, a Division of Eli Lilly and Company.

Dr. Hufstedler has most recently served as Beef Technical Advisor and Cattle Technical Consultant Manager for Elanco Animal Health. Doug’s expertise is in Beef Cattle Nutrition specializing in extensive cattle production sectors (cow-calf, heifer development, stocker cattle, and backgrounding/grow-yards), as well as feed manufacturing operations and VFD regulations. Doug and his team were instrumental in the establishment and FDA approval of the Rumensin Free Choice Veterinary Master File, which will enable feed companies a more rapid, less expensive path for FDA approval of new free-choice Rumensin products.

Doug has recently taken on a new management role at Elanco serving as the Sales Manager for the Cattle South District with sales representatives covering New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana.

Doug and his wife Susan live in Crescent, OK with their three children: Alexi, Caleb and Sarah.
