Welcome to the Department of Animal and Food Sciences

The Oklahoma State University Department of Animal and Food Sciences offers two majors and 12 study options. Students have access to food processing facilities and our farms, which house beef cattle, dairy cattle, horses, swine, goats, sheep, and poultry. Our faculty members conduct cutting-edge research in ruminant and non-ruminant nutrition, meat and food science, genetics, physiology, animal health, and sustainability.

OSU’s 25th annual Totusek Lectureship to feature The Feed Yard Foodie
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Anne Burkholder, who is perhaps best known as The Feed Yard Foodie, will be the featured speaker at Oklahoma State University’s 25th annual Totusek Lectureship on Nov. 2 at the Student Union Ballroom. Burkholder describes herself as an Ivy League athlete fueled by beef for many years before she truly “understood where beef came from.” She is now a mother of three and living in Nebraska, where she and her husband run a cattle feedyard and farming operation.
Register now for Oct. 19 OSU Beef Industry Conference
Cattle producers interested in adopting the latest best management practices to help maximize profit potential should register now to attend the Oct. 19 Oklahoma State University Beef Industry Conference. The conference will begin at 8:30 a.m., finish about mid-afternoon and take place in the OSU Conoco-Phillips Alumni Center located on Hester Street, on the southeastern side of the university’s Stillwater campus.
Sisters Kynzie and Kenna McNeill bring their skills to OSU Rodeo Team
Kynzie and Kenna McNeill are both Oklahoma State University students. They are both on the OSU Rodeo Team; one a graduate student and assistant coach, the other a freshman. Both admit to being highly competitive, especially with one another. Currently, Kenna is majoring in animal science with a production option. Her long-term goal is to one day raise horses and perform artificial insemination transfers. Big sister Kynzie hopes to eventually earn a Ph.D. in ruminant nutrition and work in the animal agriculture industry.
Science proves 45-day weaning period for calves adds significant value
It is weaning time for many cow-calf producers who wish to take advantage of value-added calf sales beginning in October. “Most cow-calf producers are aware of the 45-day weaning period requirement associated with these sales, but some may wonder why the post-weaning period needs to be so lengthy,” said Glenn Selk, Oklahoma State University Cooperative Extension emeritus animal scientist and managing editor of the university’s popular Cow-Calf Corner newsletter.
Tackle tailgates with food safety
Football season is here, and many fans are holding tailgates to cheer on their favorite teams. Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center wants to keep your food safe and recommends food safety tips for those participating in tailgating activities.
Food Product Innovation Competition open to college students across Oklahoma
Oklahoma State University’s Robert M. Kerr Food & Agricultural Products Center is challenging college students to share their creative and innovative ideas for new food and beverage products in November for a chance to compete in a product innovation competition.
